The search for one's place on Earth is quite a challenge. Just as each of us is different, we have different housing requirements and preferences. Someone will choose a classic storey house, while others will choose an apartment, and others will opt for a classic bungalow. But what to do when there is no project that meets our expectations? When we know and feel that something is missing, that this is not it? The house should be for us, not us for the house, which is why this fit is so important. This space, called an asylum, must be a reflection of ourselves. The heroes of the following interview found the perfect solution - they created the design themselves. That's why this is a home literally personalized, tailor-made to their needs and requirements. This unique couple has built something truly amazing! Meet Ewelina and Patrick, creators of the projekthszalas.
To loosen up, tell us how it all started and when the decision to build a house was made?
Hah good question. We were a couple with six months of experience. Ewelina had just bought an apartment, and Patrick had been looking for something bigger for some time. However, we quickly began to analyze how much 60-70 m2 would be enough for us. And what we would do with two apartments later (smile), and later, Ewelina suggested that maybe it would be easier to build a house, rather than meet our expectations of looking for an apartment in a big city.
At that time we still did not openly talk about our future plans for each other, because we did not want to offend each other, but we both dreamed of the same place - a single-storey house, with a small substitute for greenery in a nearby metropolitan area with a large city. Patrick did not wait long, and found some interesting ads. It turned out that the locality was well known to Evelina, because her dad had always wanted to build a house here.
Ewelina made an appointment, here again by luck, her work colleague had also recently bought a parcel there, so we had direct contact with the owner. The parcel found from the Internet disappointed us in real. We both remember how we prepared for our first visit before viewing the parcel, we were looking for information on how to negotiate, how not to let it be known that we were determined (laughs), but fate so willed that we did not have to pretend anything, because the parcel disappointed us enough to be very authentic (laughs). The owner, seeing our lack of interest, suggested another parcel. Off to the side, with a larger area.
Without enthusiasm, we agreed to go see .... And that was it! As soon as we got out of the car, Ewelina kicked me in the ankle and I could see the look on her face as she tried to have a stone face (laughs). Well, the price was a little too high for us, but a human in love strongly can jump mountains, and Ewelina knows how to go out on her own in life, and the price we proposed was accepted by the owner, and we became the owners of our land a week later, on March 8 to be exact. Ewelina laughs that in life I will not make her a better gift for women's day again :)
Now, do you see any more advantages of a ground-floor house, or maybe disadvantages of such a house?
We see the advantages only. Convenience, spaciousness, the width of the block, gives the feeling of having a huge house, although ours is not like that. The space we created gives the feeling of even having two houses. One part is such an oasis, for living during the day, and the other at night. We really like the fact that from practically every part of the house there is an opportunity to go out to the garden. The ergonomics of the house means that life is divided into zones every day, and yet we are constantly together. During the day we pass each other, seemingly at the end of the house, but we still catch each other's eye, which cannot be said of storied houses. We were very keen to ensure that in the future "children do not run away upstairs" and have no contact with their parents.
We know that the first letter of your last name inspired you for the shape of the house, which allowed you to divide the house into living and night zones. Does this division in the H-block make it easier for you to communicate in the house?
That's exactly what it was, and definitely the two blocks make it easier to function. First of all - clarity of zones. The option of first barn as a living zone and second barn as a night zone connected by a connector in the form of a hallway is a hit for us. Thanks to this layout, life from the living room or kitchen does not move to the bedroom zone. We can quietly watch a movie, cook until late at night, while our child sleeps in the room in the second unit. We don't worry that her room is located just above the living room, and it is necessary to be very quiet. On top of that, the bathroom is divided. When Patrick gets up in the morning, he doesn't wake us up. No one runs up and down the stairs, it's really comfortable.
Can you tell us what idea you have for the facade of the building?
Sure! Our favorite color is black, so we are planning the entire facade black. We would like the whole house to be covered with elastolith black with small wood elements.
Would you change anything in the design/interior after the passage of time and the experience you have already gained?
Yes, we would have made the living room part longer by 1.5-2m. At first we thought about it, but the border of the parcel with the forest limited us, and extending this block would change the alignment of the house - it would have to stand more at a slant, which from the car entrance would not be convenient. Nevertheless, now we would combine more to lengthen the living room, because we had to combine with the choice of chairs and table, so that we could sit comfortably at them.
What's your plan for cleaning tall windows and who's going to clean them more often?
The robot will wash them :) and if the robot can't handle it, Patrick from the outside and Ewelina from the inside with a telescopic washer. Already Ewelina washed this way and it almost came out perfectly
The kitchen with the living room is the heart of your home. You did the kitchen design on your own, will you tell our readers where you started? What design software did you use? How much time did you spend on it? Where did you get the knowledge on how to design a kitchen and what to pay attention to?
In fact, Ewelina was responsible for the entire interior. Patrick just said what he liked and when an interior was displayed to him, he would send Ewelina. From the very beginning we had agreed that the kitchen would be black up to the ceiling. Ewelina designed the entire kitchen in Homestyler and showed me from time to time, until we reached the final version. Nevertheless, it was more cosmetic, like adding greenery on the wall and laths on the island. Ewelina designed the kitchens for about a month, she finished an interior design course, so she has basic knowledge. She looked for inspiration on Pinterest, Instagram mostly abroad and groups for architects on Facebook.
Does the kitchen design completely match the initial plans? How did the design change and what did the changes result from?
The design agrees 80% - the island was changed, laths were used instead of sintering, due to the price of the first one. Limitations and changes we made were at the stage of already talking with the carpenter to get the most optimal price (for example, the middle of the furniture we have white, so we saved a lot of cash).
Which doors did you choose and why? What convinced you to go with laminate? Did you think only about the visual effect or the practicality of the doors you chose?
Our black doors are Egger black shadow and on the island Egger Corbridge. As for the choice of material, the answer is simple - price. We have a little child who we know will like to go with markers everywhere. In a few years we expect to replace the countertops with those dreamed of in sintered/granite, and perhaps the door if those get damaged. Our kitchen is pretty, we know that, but with the materials used, we have shown that pretty doesn't always have to be very expensive.
What kitchen elements were your must haves?
A 3-meter kitchen island, because we like to cook a lot, and it was always our dream to have contact with guests during parties, and not to go to another room. Hockers for the island, this was our next must have, to always accompany the person cooking or just being in the kitchen. Dual cook oven, we wanted to test if indeed a double oven would replace our two separate ovens, so far we are not disappointed. Cargo system in the furniture - we have a huge 2.5m cargo space that acts as a storage pantry, all the things we need are at hand, and two small cargo spaces on the island that hold spices, oilers and boards.
You have lived in the house for a short time, but how are your impressions of using wood plank on the floor? Did you also consider other materials for the floor?
We are very happy with the wood plank, and in the end we are very happy that the option we in the beginning rejected because of the price, we finally have at home. In truth, we prepared the whole house for tiles and panels - the screeds were adjusted to their height. We wanted to have no thresholds in the house, so vinyl, for example, was not an option. Initially we were convinced that we would lay chevron-type tiles, but the prices in our area for labor jumped up so much that we got real wood plank for the same price. The choice was simple and obvious to us. Along the way there was the idea of herringbone panels, but we quickly abandoned them due to the long waiting time, and we wanted to build fast. We got the wood plank from the outlet and it was the best decision - available immediately and beautiful, natural, warm.
Planning which room made you have to make the biggest compromises? Which room did you have the most fun designing?
The biggest compromises we had to make were in the garage. We really wanted a 2-car garage. And there was no way to make the space which my husband dreamed of in the style of a clubhouse. We were limited by the square footage, which we didn't want to exceed. From the very beginning, we took a realistic approach to construction, building according to our capabilities. Which life verified quite a bit later on anyway. The greatest joy for this was the design of the daughter's room! Until the last month of the finishing work, I had no idea about this room, because we planned to finish it later anyway. However, as I began to think, create, Patrick realized, we finally have the most finished room in the house, which immediately brings a smile to our face and our daughter priceless. What we like we know, but to hit the child's taste is much more difficult.
What are you most proud of around the house? (If each of you is proud of something else - go ahead and expand your pride ;)) Which room is most meaningful to you?
Patrick - from the boiler room, Evelina - from the fact that the house stands, and we live in it. Really, looking at 14 months of construction, including 2.5 months of finishing, we are proud of everything. It took a lot of sacrifice on our part that we were able to achieve the house in such a condition, the overblown budget required more work on Patrick's part at home, and each activity generated even more thankfulness. Nevertheless, we can no longer imagine living any other way. The location of our house has something about it. Everyday deer, pheasants, bunnies, allow us to stop for a while and watch their peaceful life. It is beautiful to be able to live and be inspired by nature.
When looking for home accessories, were you more likely to make trips to stores or mainly order online?
Only the Internet, all home equipment was scrolling through hundreds of reviews and choosing equipment...at the end of what was available in the store, but not giving up on the guidelines. That's why we had a lot of surprise and fun how the refrigerator looks in real, or how cool the illuminated dishwasher or laundry dryer is. We only went to look at the sofa corner, because we wanted to see the available colors of fabrics in live, but we already had the model selected online.
You were certainly curious about this project, so we encourage you to follow Ewelina and Patrick's Instagram- @projekthszalas, where you can find even more interesting information and inspiring ideas. We are very impressed with the projekthszalas - a thoughtful, detailed and practical home close to nature. Do we need anything more?
